SHIFT: Synergizing Health Interventions for Toronto Gay and Bisexual Men

Despite recent advances in HIV treatment and increases in usage of PrEP, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are still the population with the highest incidence and prevalence of HIV in Canada. GBM still face barriers to accessing healthcare in traditional settings – almost half of GBM are not out to their physicians! As such, recent research has shown the efficacy of community-based sexual health interventions in improving health and wellbeing for GBM.

“Task-shifting” is a strategy used in other places around the world, endorsed by the WHO. The idea is that community workers are trained to provide care when clinicians are less available. This study plans to explore how “task-shifting” to GBM-focused organizations and workers, as well as the creation of integrated programs (Health Hubs!) may be useful for increasing access to combination HIV prevention services for GBM.

Upon completion of the study, findings will be shared with trans and cis gay, bi, 2S, and MSM communities through a conference (Learning and Action Institute), video, and our lab’s social media (@cruiselab). They will also be shared with clinicians and relevant stakeholders. We are hoping to use the results from this study to develop a GBM Health Hub in Toronto and increase access to care for GBM across Ontario.

If you are a front line community worker (FLW) or clinician working with GBM in Toronto or Ontario, please reach out to! We are asking potential participants to participate in semi-structured interviews about the roles of FLWs and clinicians in serving GBM in Ontario.
